Outdoor Wedding Ceremony Music: What Couples Need to Know About Live Strings

Outdoor weddings are beautiful.

The light, the scenery, the dreamy garden ceremony photos. The soft breeze…

…And then there’s the part no one wants to talk about:

The weather.

If you’re considering live string music for an outdoor ceremony, we want you to have the best experience possible, and that means planning ahead for a few key things that protect the instruments, support the musicians, and keep the music sounding its best.

(And no, we’re not being divas. We’re being professionals. There’s a difference. 😉)

First: Yes, We Love Outdoor Weddings!

We genuinely love playing outdoor ceremonies. Tennessee venues are stunning, and there’s something so special about live music floating through an open-air setting.

But outdoor weddings require one thing indoor weddings don’t:

A weather plan.

Actually… two.

Our #1 Requirement: A Rain Plan and a Sun/Shade Plan

For outdoor weddings, we require both:

  • a rain plan

  • and a sun/shade plan

This is not because we’re high-maintenance. It’s because string instruments cannot be exposed to rain… not even a drizzle.

Violins, violas, and cellos are made of wood. They are delicate, expensive, and they do not mix with moisture.

Even a little bit of rain can damage the instrument, warp the wood, or affect how it plays.

So if there’s even a chance of rain, we need a backup option ready to go.

Why Shade Matters (Hint: It’s Not Just About Us)

Yes, shade matters for musician comfort, but it’s also about the technology we use.

All of our music is loaded onto iPads, which means we’re not flipping paper pages in the wind (thank goodness!).

But iPads in direct sunlight? In the middle of a Tennessee summer?

They overheat. And when an iPad overheats, it shuts down.

So if we’re in direct sun, we’re not just uncomfortable — we can literally lose access to our music. Not ideal. 🙈

Temperature Matters More Than Most People Realize

We’ve played hundreds of weddings, and one thing we’ve learned is this:

Extreme temperatures affect performance.

We require:

  • a fan if the temperature is over 85 degrees

  • a heater if the temperature is under 60 degrees

This is for two reasons:

  1. instruments are sensitive to temperature

  2. humans are also sensitive to temperature 😅

We are dressed in professional all-black attire, and we have played far too many weddings where musicians were placed in full sun on a 95–100 degree day.

And while we will always show up and do our job, overheating musicians are not going to be able to perform at their best… and you deserve our best.

A Real-Life Example

We once played a wedding where it was about 95 degrees out in the middle of June (Tennessee summers can be brutal!). Guests were provided fans and parasols to help provide some relief from the heat.

Which was thoughtful and honestly amazing!

But when we’re playing… we can’t fan ourselves. We can’t hold an umbrella. We can’t step away for shade. We’re actively performing.

So we plan ahead to make sure we’re covered.

The Easiest Solution (That Couples Love)

If you want the simplest, most stress-free option for outdoor weddings, we recommend:

A 10x10 white pop-up tent (yes, like a tailgating tent!).

You can get one on Amazon, and many couples even return it after the wedding is over.

It’s:

  • affordable

  • easy to set up

  • looks clean and professional

  • provides shade

  • protects the instruments

  • keeps the iPads working

  • helps the musicians perform their best

It’s a win for everyone!

Bottom Line: These Policies Protect Your Experience

Our weather policies exist for one reason: to ensure your wedding music is beautiful, seamless, and stress-free.

Because the last thing you should be worrying about on your wedding day is whether the string quartet is roasting in the sun or sprinting away from a drizzle.

We’ll help you plan for all of it ahead of time, so on the day of, you can simply enjoy the moment!
