Why Live String Music Is the Most Romantic Way to Propose (And How It Works)
There are a lot of ways to propose.
You can do it casually at home. You can do it on vacation. You can do it at a fancy dinner. You can do it in front of a crowd… or somewhere quiet and private.
But there’s one thing that will instantly elevate a proposal without making it feel overdone:
Live music.
And if we’re being honest?
Live strings are hard to beat!
Over the years, Southern Strings has been booked for a handful of proposals, and every single one has reminded us why we love them so much. They’re intimate, emotional, and so fun to be part of… especially because we get to help pull off the surprise.
If you’re planning a proposal (or you’re a proposal planner looking for a live music team), here’s what to know about how proposal music works, why it’s so powerful, and how we make it seamless!
Proposals Are Different, and That’s What Makes Them Special
Weddings are magical, but proposals are their own kind of magic.
They’re smaller. More intimate. More personal.
And unlike a wedding, where everyone knows what’s happening, proposals have this extra layer of excitement because only a few people are in on the secret.
For us, that’s half the fun!
We’ve played proposals on rooftops, in parks, and in hidden little corners of town, and there’s something so special about being part of the moment when the music starts and the person being proposed to realizes what’s about to happen.
Why Live Strings Are Better Than a Playlist
Could you play a song from your phone speaker? Sure.
But live strings do something completely different.
They instantly make the moment feel thoughtful, elevated, intentional, intimate, and honestly unforgettable
A playlist says, “I planned this.”
Live strings say, “I planned this for a long time, and I wanted it to feel like us.”
And there’s something about hearing your song played live — in real time, in the moment — that makes it feel like a movie scene you’ll remember forever.
A Sweet Proposal Moment We’ll Never Forget
One of the most memorable proposals we’ve ever played was in a small courtyard off Main Street in downtown Franklin, Tennessee.
As soon as we started playing “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, the girl immediately knew what was happening, and she instantly started crying. It was so sweet and so genuine, and you could tell it was a moment she’d remember for the rest of her life.
That’s what live music does… it just hits different!

What Proposal Music Typically Looks Like
Most proposals we play are private, and the music portion is usually short and sweet.
Typically, couples book us for about 15–20 minutes of music total.
That usually includes:
the “main song” (the one that plays during the proposal itself)
one upbeat “celebration” song after they say yes
a few romantic songs while you’re taking photos, cherishing the moment, and maybe even FaceTiming family and friends
It’s quick, meaningful, and perfectly tailored to the moment.
Yes, We Can Keep a Surprise!
A lot of people assume live musicians would be hard to coordinate for a proposal.
But proposals are actually one of the most seamless events we do — because we plan everything ahead of time and communicate quietly behind the scenes.
Here’s how it usually works:
We arrive early to set up and make sure everything is ready before the couple arrives.
We hide (yes, really!) around corners, behind walls, and out of view, waiting for the exact moment.
We coordinate a cue, typically via text message from a proposal planner or photographer.
Then, of course, is the best part: the moment happens. They turn the corner, we start playing their song, the proposer gets down on one knee… and BAM! 💍
Our Favorite Song Requests
Most people planning a proposal already have one or two songs in mind, and we love that.
They’ll tell us:
“This is our song”
“This is the song we want for the proposal moment”
“Can you play something romantic before it?”
“Can you play something upbeat afterward?”
We’ll take those anchor songs and fill in the gaps with other romantic, recognizable favorites that match the vibe.
Here are a few songs that consistently work beautifully for proposals:
Romantic classics:
Can’t Help Falling in Love — Elvis Presley
How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) — James Taylor
Make You Feel My Love — Bob Dylan/Adele
The Way You Look Tonight — Frank Sinatra
Modern love songs:
Perfect — Ed Sheeran
Love Story — Taylor Swift
A Thousand Years – Christina Perri
I Choose You — Sara Bareilles
I Will Follow You Into the Dark — Death Cab for Cutie
Disney / cinematic:
Can You Feel the Love Tonight — The Lion King
Tale as Old as Time – Beauty and the Beast
Fun “she said yes!” celebration songs:
This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) — Natalie Cole
Chapel of Love — Dixie Cups
Come and Get Your Love — Redbone
All You Need Is Love – The Beatles
You Are the Best Thing – Ray LaMontagne

Our Favorite Kind of Proposal to Play
If we’re being totally honest, our favorite proposal bookings are the ones that feel intimate, simple, and beautifully planned.
A trio tucked into a sweet spot in Nashville.
A planner coordinating the details.
A photographer capturing the moment.
A short set of music that feels cinematic and personal.
And we especially love proposals for couples who are visiting Nashville from out of town. There’s something extra fun about being part of a “Nashville story” they’ll tell forever!
For Proposal Planners: We’re Easy to Work With
We’ve had the joy of working with niche proposal planning businesses in the area (shoutout to Nashville Proposal Co!), and we’d love to partner with more planners in the future.
We understand how important it is for proposals to be discreet, on time, smooth, and low-stress… And we’re happy to coordinate behind the scenes and be one of the easiest parts of the entire plan!
